What is a Home Exchange Compared to a House Swap

So what is home exchange compared to house swap you ask?

Its simple, on Hombie, a house swap is when two homeowners swap their homes at the same time.

For example, you might live in Sydney and want to visit Queenstown. You find a Queenstown homeowner who wants to visit Sydney around the same time.

You both agree to swap homes. You stay in theirs while they stay in yours.

Home exchanges on Hombie work a little differently. It can be difficult to find a homeowner that wants to swap at exactly the same time in the area you are looking for.

So we have devised a point system for our site where if you live in Sydney and want to go to Queenstown you simply find the home you want at the time you want and offer the owners points from your accrued points total.

When you have completed your stay, they receive points from you which they can use for another exchange elsewhere.

It’s a great system for spending a week here, a week there, any amount of time you want, anywhere that you want. You can travel for as long as you want, even the whole year if you set everything up for it.

How Home Exchanges Work in 5 Steps

The following is how a home exchange and house swap works on Hombie.

A house set up for a luxury home exchange.1. Find a Home You’d Like to Stay In

Start by browsing homes listed on the home exchange platform. You can search by destination, travel dates, or home type.

When you find a home that suits your needs and is available when you’d like to travel, open the listing to see more details such as photos, amenities, and the owner’s preferred exchange destinations.

2. Contact the Home Owner

Once you’ve found a place you’d like to stay in, send the homeowner a friendly message through the platform.

Introduce yourself, share a little about your home, and propose a swap. You might say, “We’d love to stay in your coastal home this January, would you be interested in visiting our place in Melbourne around the same time?”

This starts the conversation and helps both parties see if it’s a good fit. If they do want to stay in your place at the same time, it’s a straight swap.

3. Discuss and Agree on the Exchange

A home exchange works by contacting each other often over a cup of coffee. If both parties are interested, you’ll then discuss the details such as travel dates, number of guests, how long each stay will be, and whether it’s a simultaneous swap (you stay in each other’s homes at the same time).

If they aren’t interested in coming to your area, or the timing isnt right, it’s a home exchange where you offer them points to stay in their home at the agreed time.

You can also agree on extras like car swaps, pet care, or use of bikes or pools. Once everything sounds right, you confirm the agreement through the platform.

4. Prepare for the Exchange

A host for a home exchange has left fresh towels for their guests. Both homeowners get ready for their guests by tidying the house, making space in wardrobes, leaving clean linens, and writing a short house guide with key information (like Wi-Fi codes, local tips, and appliance instructions).

Hombie members have a template you can use for a house guide in the members area.

Most exchangers also agree on how keys will be handed over and exchange emergency contact details, it’s all about trust and respect.

5. Enjoy the Stay and Leave It as You Found It

You travel to your exchange partner’s home and enjoy living like a local.

During the stay, treat their home with care, as if it were your own. When you leave, make sure the house is clean and tidy for their return.

Most members stay in touch afterward, many even form lasting friendships and plan future swaps together.

Save Money and Travel Like a Local

Hotels can drain your holiday budget.

With home exchanges, accommodation is free, and far more personal. You’ll usually stay in a larger space than a hotel with all the facilities you have at home.

Plus, you experience the destination like a local. Think favourite cafés, parks, and neighbourhood secrets that hotels never show you.

Meet Like Minded Homeowners Around the World

Home exchangers are a generous bunch, often leaving behind maps, welcome notes, and personal tips.

You’re not just exchanging homes, you’re joining a global community of people who value trust, culture, and connection.

How a Home Exchange with Points Works

A couple who have just moved into their holiday home through a home exchange. If you love the idea of exchanging homes but struggle to coordinate dates or destinations, a home exchange with points might be your answer.

Instead of exchanging directly, you earn points when someone stays in your home. You can then spend those points to stay somewhere else, whenever it suits you.

At Hombie we give you an amount of points to get you away on your first holiday.

This points-based system opens up more flexibility, making it easier to travel more often, plan in advance, or visit destinations that you could only dream of.

This is a great article to read if you are thinking of travelling a lot.

“How a House Exchange May Change the Way you Travel Forever”

Why Use a Points System Instead of a Direct Swap?

Sometimes dates or destinations don’t match, that’s where points come in. With a home exchange with points, you can:

  • Travel anywhere, at any time. Just like you would with a hotel.
  • Earn points
  • Use those points to stay somewhere else later

It’s perfect if you want to travel more often than you host, or vice versa.

How Points Are Earned and Spent

Each night someone stays in your home, you earn points. You can then spend those points booking other homes, therefore no direct exchange is needed.
